Today, we visited Africycle’s shop and the Grace Orphan Care Center. This little boy is six years old and during our stay, played quietly next to me for awhile, showing me the slightly broken steel see-saw, climbing on walls, and running around with some of the other kids with a soccer ball (playing IN their classroom).
Kids come here three times a week after their normal school hours, and are tutored important, sometimes technical, subjects like agriculture. The Care Center is “a support group for children who are orphaned and/or disabled by AIDS/HIV.” Over 200 children have been involved in the program, and Africycle provides the means to support them through the selling of used bicycles from Canada. After our day, we went to Africycle’s founder’s apartment and had lasting conversations about bamboo, bikes, Malawi’s culture, and collaboration between sectors!
